For most people, attending Comic-Con in San Diego is more than enough convention-going for one week. But authors Ernest Cline, Ready Player One, and Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear, are not most people. On Thursday, July 21, both authors made an appearance at w00tstock 3.0, a one-night event billed as "a night of geeks + music" in San Diego (how they found any convention space at all that wasn't booked out is both surprising and a small mystery). Ernest was slated to appear to give a few readings of his spoken word poetry. You might have seen a previous effort of his on YouTube, "Dance Monkeys Dance"—and if you haven't, hit that link and check it out, it's really good stuff—and as you'll see, his newer stuff hasn't lost any of its edge or sensibility. It's a treat. And then Patrick Rothfuss appears on stage (at 8:25 in the video) to give a short reading from an advice column he used to write for a college newspaper. It's, well, let's just say you should maybe view it as a parable and don't try it at home. By Rothfuss's own admission, "It started as an advice column and after about three weeks it kind of devolved into me making fun of whoever wrote in." So take this advice with a grain of salt. Please. In any event, here's sixteen minutes well-spent.
